And now, oh yes, on to the final chapter in our Scotland/Holland holiday!

When we left you last it was a Wednesday evening, and V and I were wrapping up our three days in Edinburgh resting up for what was ahead. Thursday was a travel day, and travel we did! Our morning started off with one last big Scottish breakfast at the hotel, a short, slightly soggy walk to the bus stop, and a ride to the Edinburgh airport where we hopped on our plane to Amsterdam, the land of tulips and windmills. It was a homecoming for V, but for me a brand new adventure in a brand new country! Edinburgh!

I LOVE Edinburgh! It's been my favorite city for many, many years now ever since I first saw it on a spur of the moment side trip while on a holiday that had gone slightly awry. Some friends suggested taking in the city for a couple of days, so I did and I was hooked. That's where V and I were heading next on a gale-like Monday morning out on the Isle of Skye. We loaded up our car and headed off into the winds and the rain at about 8:30AM. So that Monday morning was the beginning of our 8th day in Scotland. Once again we packed up our bags and loaded our car, got out the maps and our set of directions where we could easily lay our hands on them, pulled out onto the road saying "Left, left, left, left..." and we were off!

To The Northern Coast

That Friday, the morning of our 5th day in Scotland (after one last mammoth Scottish breakfast for the road) we packed our bags, loaded our car, and set off for the far north coast. We were heading for Wick where we had a B&B room reserved for just the one night, and we had the whole day to wind our way up the A9 and see what we could see along the way!

My Heart's In The Highlands

My friends often ask me what it is about Scotland and the Highlands that draws me to them so strongly. Well, it's mostly one of those mysterious intangibles I think, really just a very strong sense of being home there, of belonging. But that's not really much of an explanation, is it? So I usually just tell them, if you ever go and see it for yourself, you will know. Really that's as true an explanation I think as the first, and now V has been there to see for herself! Years ago, about 25 years ago actually, when I lived in Texas I stumbled across what proved to be one of the largest Renaissance festivals in the country, Scarborough Faire near Waxahachie, TX. This coming fall I will be attending a birthday party with a number of very jolly folk all of whom love the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The party itself is sure to be a wonderful experience, and I'm really looking forward to it. But I'm also looking forward to visiting the venue, Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. It's a lovingly restored authentic Shaker settlement, and it serves today as a living museum, a piece of American history that you can walk into, experience, and become a part of. It looks wonderful. And it's haunted. Seriously.

Southern Comfort

Another place I would love to visit someday in the not too distant future is Savannah, Georgia. I can't remember when it was I first became curious about the city, but I do remember reading a long time ago that Savannah was one of the few large cities of the Deep South to escape major damage during the Civil War. Because of this good fortune much of the original ante-bellum architecture still stands in the city along with many of its original parks and public squares and of course many ancient and majestic Live Oak trees covered with spanish moss. It seems the perfect place to take a small step back in time and experience a little southern charm.

There are a lot of places I haven't been, but that I'd like to visit sometime just to check out; San Francisco, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Savannah, Georgia, Iceland, The Canadian Rockies, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tortuga and the Caribbean in general, and a big chunk of New Mexico as well (Albuquerque, Taos, and Santa Fe) to name just a few. So when I see interesting articles about some of these places I sometimes stash them away somewhere just to remind myself of possible future adventures to look forward to. Carolina In My Mind

I've been to North Carolina only a few times, and then just to the Raleigh and Nags Head areas. One of these days though I'm going to spend some time there exploring because I know there are lots of really beautiful parts of that state.

My cousin Torrie moved there a few years back, and she loves it. She sent me this picture a week or so ago. She snapped it from her front porch after getting home from work one afternoon. All I can say is "wow".

James Taylor mentions North Carolina in several of his songs, usually with a note of longing to it. Well, after seeing Torrie's view from her front porch, I think JT has it right.
