Day To Day

Mmmm....Breakfast!

Casserole01

A few weeks back my friend Ari (Thanks, Ari!) posted a link to a blog called "
The Kitchn" on her facebook page, and specifically to a set of recipes for 6 breakfast casserole dishes. Now I love a good breakfast. It's easily my favorite meal of the day, and a real breakfast is the best way I know of to get a Saturday off to a great start. So of course I started reading...and reading....and read some more. It didn't take long for me to decide I needed to try out some of these casseroles... Read More...

A Promise Kept

HPIM1957
Well, it's been a few weeks now since I got back from my Scotland/Holland trip, and I'm finally getting around to writing a bit about it. The problem is where to begin? It was such a great holiday! I was gone from home for 25 days, and together V and I had 22 of those days to run around together and have all sorts of Adventure. Best holiday ever! But there's so much to tell of that one post will not even come close to covering it all. So I'll try to do maybe 3-4 posts over the next few weeks to try to fit it all in. I won't make any promises of course, but I'll give it a shot! Read More...

Well, fugitting has ensued for sure. V's three week holiday here in the states has come and gone, just like that. I never knew three weeks could fly by so fast!

Now the place feels awfully empty without her being here. Even the cats are missing her, both Midnight and Josie sleep now on the bed in V's spot and on a hoodie sweat shirt that V was wearing on the cool mornings. And all three of them are wondering about the sudden reduction in their treat quota, LOL! Yes, V was The Giver Of Treats, and she is sorely missed. ^-^ Read More...

Mock-Yeah-Ing-Yeah-Bird-Yeah!

Mockingbird01
Everybody have you heard? LOL!

We have a mocking bird. Actually we have two, a wonderfully entertaining pair of mockingbirds who have lived in our yard now for two years. It's a lot of fun to watch them going about their birdy business and generally roaming around the yard keeping things in tip top shape, at least that's what it appears they think they are doing. And when the weather is nice enough to sleep with the windows open I enjoy hearing their song pretty much all through the night. It can be 2AM out there and pitch black, and those two will still be busy, busy, busy and singing away. Now that might irk some people, but I love it....

Sprouts!

Strawberry
It's going to be a hot one out there today, especially for it being only early May. They're calling for a high of 88F, about 31C for my overseas friends. I'm guessing that has to be at least 15 degrees or so above normal. *whew* So instead of mowing the lawn today (which is definitely due) I decided to just do a good soaking of all the new flowers sprouting up around the yard and call it a day. Major slacking will ensue.... Read More...

Wow, it's a day away from May. Amazing! A visitor writing to me last week about something she had found here on Little Delving (booty!) graciously pointed out that it appeared as if I may have disappeared from the web entirely, if one were to judge from this 'news' section of Little Delving. LOL! Point taken. I've been a bit wrapped up in this first part of the year so far. Just had a few Things To Do, and so I've been away and occupied. But this morning I thought I'd pop in to say hey, offer a Spring Update, and let you know what's been going on.... Read More...

The End In Sight!

HomeInProg076
Ah, The Summer Of Projects rolls on, but now that we’re creeping up on the end of July things are finally beginning to shape up and come together. The end is in sight, and I like what I see.

This week I can now officially say that the front porch is done. All we have left to do is put covers on two of the power outlets, but that’s close enough to done in my book! Of course next summer...

Renovations!

HomeInProg007
This is the Summer of Big Projects, and so far it’s going well. My neighbor Dave and his crew have made some great progress on the new front porch. That’s the biggest of the big projects. We’re at about the 50% mark now, and it is looking really nice. You can definitely see now how it’s going to change the whole look and feel of the house. The porch is wide and chunky and spacious, and I think it’s going to make for a very inviting front entry way, the kind of porch that makes people smile when they pull into the driveway and see it.... June Already???

Happy June 1st, Campers! Happy

HomeBefore026
Wow, the year is spinning by fast these days.Things here have been going pretty good though so I can’t complain! Been a busy spring so far, but now I’m home and settled in for the summer I think. Nothing ahead for me except a LOT of yard work. Major yard projects going on, well, that and getting my new front porch built, but that’s one for the contractor. I’m doing all the landscaping myself though and it will be plenty to keep me busy, no worries there. My neighbor Lois asked me the other day if I would ever get it all done, and I told her to ask me again in October. LOL! Yep, looking forward to autumn already and having all of the big stuff behind me. So far this spring I’ve put in...

Out Of Hibernation At Last

Hello, Hello! Yes, well, what can I say? It’s been a long time since I’ve posted a newsie LD update (as a few of you have reminded me) so I guess now with Spring finally here for real, it’s time for me to crawl out of my cave, shake off the dust, rub the sleep from my eyes, and get something to eat. Honestly, I have been keeping busy this winter, and I have been updating LD from time to time too, just not in the news section. Those of you who have been watching may have noticed a lot of activity in Crow Corner over the past few months, but I’ll leave that for a bit later. This morning I’m all about the coming seasons and all the work I have ahead of me to make this new house of mine my real and true Home. Read More...

Frozen In Time

WinterStorm15

Greetings, All, from the Great Frozen South!

In case you hadn't heard, we got hit with a pretty good snow and ice storm down here this week. Now I've lived a lot of places over the years, including a few well known for their challenging winters like Boston and Chicago, and I think I'm safe in saying that this particular ice storm ranks right up there with any I've seen anywhere in the country over the years. It was a proper Storm. More beautiful than I can describe with it's gleaming, glistening coat of clear bright ice, but also a major challenge to all the folk trying to live with it! Read More...

Good-bye, Old Friend

Hello, All, and a belated Happy New Year to you! January almost slipped by without a comment here, but it looks like I'm gonna sneak a post in just under the wire. LOL! We had a bit of unexpected excitement just after Christmas. My trusty old Apple Titanium Powerbook (that's 'TiBook' in Apple speak, but 'Pi (Pirate!) Book' to all who knew him) suddenly and most unexpectedly kicked the bucket. He was nearly 7 years old which in computer years is like, Ancient, and in truth he lived a very full and adventurous life, but I really, really hated to see him go.

Josie was just as bad as Finneas! ^-^ Between the two of them cavorting it's amazing we didn't all three go crashing down at some point. LOL! It was pretty hilarious.

The Duchess of Little Delving

Josie001

I moved into the new Little Delving hobbit hole around the end of January of this year, but I actually bought the place way back in October of last year. I had a lot of things to wrap up in Chicago, and so the whole transition down south took me a handful of months. It made for a very interesting holiday season, let me tell you. But in the end with a little luck and a little help from family and a neighbor it all worked out pretty well.

One Potato, Two Potato

Hello, tater.

It’s been a funny week here, and so I thought I’d sit down and have a bit of a chat with you. I’ll just pretend that your smiling face is there across the table from me and that all is well in the world. I like your smile, tater. It can do that for me. So I guess the obvious place to start is Virginia Tech, isn’t it? It’s not everyday here in the U.S. that we get a monster on a rampage who manages to kill some 30 people and then himself. It’s all anybody can seem to talk about, and it certainly is all any of the media outlets seem to know is going on in the world this week. It’s a tragedy for sure. There is no denying that. My heart goes out to the families and the friends of all those lost in the senseless killings. Life is a beautiful thing, but it can also be brutal and unpredictable. It can be short. Best not ever take it for granted. But there is something about all of this that is disturbing me greatly, something besides the tragedy itself.

My Mountain & Me

My sister absolutely LOVES taking personality tests. She gets a real kick out of it, and enjoys seeing how her results change over time. When she finds one that is especially fun to do she always send me the link so I can play too. Here's her latest find, a drawing test I'm gonna call My Mountain. It's a very easy to use click and draw site where they ask you to draw your image (a simple one!) of a mountain. Once you're done they ask you a handful of questions (multiple choice) about your mountain, and then based on your answers they give you a quick and breezy snapshot of your personality. Fun! And they actually came pretty close on me. Not a perfect snapshot, but not too far off the mark either.
Anyways, just thought I'd share the fun so you can play too! Happy
Cheers,
JB

Girding For Battle

Helmet Size 37: But What Happened To Those '85 Helmets?

Even bronzed, lions prove difficult to measure.

Erin Edmister learned this atop a ladder Monday, when he struggled to wrap a measuring tape around the manes of the two statues that guard the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago.

"His ears kind of stick out 3 to 4 inches, depending on where you start," Edmister barked below to a co-worker who scribbled down the measurements.

"Nine feet, exactly, across the belly," he declared, while measuring the South Lion, formally titled "Stands in an Attitude of Defiance."

The North Lion, "On the Prowl," patiently awaited his fitting.

Far Flung Friends

You know, as the years go by I seem to end up farther and farther away from my closest friends. Now usually it has more to do with me and my gypsy ways than anything else (I do have a habit of loading up the wagon and rolling on to greener pastures every 6 or 7 years or so,) but it's not always me moving away, sometimes they're the ones picking up and moving on. I've also been lucky enough to meet some wonderful people when I was wandering far from home, and with these friends we just start off at a distance. And then sometimes it's a combination of the two that takes somebody far away. Case in point, Laura! Read More...

Spring time and Yeats

Of youth and love, memories and regret, and lessons learned.

Down By The Sally Gardens, W. B. Yeats;
Music by Ivor Gurney; Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Tenor
PinkPeachTree1888

Down by the salley gardens
My love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens
With little snow-white feet.
She bid me take life easy,
As the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish,
With her would not agree.

In a field by the river
My love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder
She laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy,
As the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish,
And now am full of tears.

Saying Goodbye

Angels, Bruce Holmes

It’s one of the most natural things in the world, a basic part of Life itself, and yet that doesn’t seem to make it any easier when it comes your turn to say goodbye to someone who has been a part of your life. And a part of me realizes that this is a Good Thing. Losing someone you love should hurt. It is a part of Life.

Sometimes you just have to laugh

Okay, so I know things are not so good in several spots around the world these days, but sometimes all you can do is trust that everything is going to work out for the best. Someday. Maybe. I mean really, on the geological time scale, how much of this stuff really matters? A million years from now, who's gonna know about it? Seriously. Think about it. And maybe try to smile a little. Maybe it will help.

Thursday Thoughts

Well it’s nearly the end of another week, and it seems like not too much of news worthiness has happened here lately. Leah and I spent sometime on the phone and on-line together this week going over some sample websites for her musical. She’s going to talk it over with her collaborator Sean, but I think we might see a new MarriedAlive.net website up and running by this time next week. If it happens I’ll post a link here on Little Delving.

Other than that, things have been fairly quiet. Maggie and I finished reading Eragon two nights back.

This one struck me...

They say miracles are past, and we have our philosphical
persons to make modern and familiar, things supernatural
and causeless. Hence it is that we make trifles of terrors,
ensconcing ourselves into seeming knowledge when we should
submit ourselves to an unknown fear.
