Well, the front runners have made it to Nome! Jeff King and his dog team pulled off an exciting win crossing the finish line at about 2:00 AM CST today (Wednesday, 3/15) completing the 1112 miles in a total time of 9 days, 11 hours, 11 mins, and 36 seconds. He was greeted with cheers, flowers, and all the pancakes and treats that he and his dogs could eat!

Doug Swingley rolled in just less than 3 hours later for second place, Paul Gebhardt about 1 hour later still for third and DeeDee Jonrowe about 1 hour behind Paul for fourth place.

Ben Valkes is currently in the Red Lantern position some 2 days back having just left Galena about 10:00 AM this morning. The Red Lantern is an honored award for the last musher and dog team to reach Nome. In a race where many teams never finish, 11 mushers and dog teams have scratched already this year, reaching Nome is considered a great accomplishment in and of itself.

And there will be pancakes and treats waiting for Ben and his dogs in Nome too. Well, pancakes and well deserved nap time for Ben or whoever it is who comes in under the Red Lantern this year!
